Mounds State Park, in Anderson Indiana, contains and preserves some of the finest examples of prehistoric Native American earthworks and mound building in Indiana. Built by the Adena and Hopewell cultures around 160 B.C., the 10 mounds and earthworks within the park range in size from a few inches tall to several feet high. These mounds were used primarily for ceremony, celebration, and observation of solstices, equinoxes and stellar events.
Along with the mounds, Mounds State Park has many other stories to tell, including a depression era amusement park, early Indiana pioneer history and connections to an early light rail system called the Interurban, which ran until the 1940s. Mounds State Park companion provides visitors information about the park and its history beyond what is readily available on park signage.
